Updating a story posted yesterday regarding starter Phil Hughes and back stiffness, Jack Curry of YES Network reports that Hughes' diagnosis is a bulging disc in his back, which in turn will sideline the 26-year-old temporarily. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman gave an estimation of at least two weeks until Hughes gets back into work on the mound.
Since game three of the American League Championship Series in October against the Detroit Tigers, this is the second time Hughes has dealt with back issues. Entering the final year of his current deal, Hughes is expected to garner the number four slot in the rotation, with hopes of showing a full season of strong work as he enters his first run in free agency next offseason.
Moreover, with time being of the essence, as this an extremely early portion of spring training, Hughes has time between now and the start of the season to alleviate any issues and be ready to take the hill.
