To make room for newly-acquired slugger Travis Hafner, the New York Yankees have designated outfielder Russ Canzler for assignment.

Canzler, 26, was claimed by the Yankees in early January in part of a busy offseason for the versatile fielder. After spending last season with the Cleveland Indians, Canzler was claimed by the Toronto Blue Jays in December, then the Indians in January, then by the Yankees shortly after.

In 26 games last season, Canzler hit .269 with three home runs and 11 RBI. The right-handed hitting corner outfielder, who has a career batting average of .400 against lefties, was expected to compete for New York's fourth outfielder spot during spring training with veterans Matt Diaz and Thomas Neal. In addition to outfield, Canzler can play first base.

Hafner was signed to a one-year deal worth $2 million, with a possibility to make an additional $4 million in incentives. The former All-Star will be replacing Raul Ibanez as New York's left-handed designated hitter.
