Despite signing veteran outfielder Matt Diaz this past week, the New York Yankees are still interested in acquiring free agent Scott Hairston, reports Kevin Kernan of the New York Post.

Diaz agreed to a minor league deal, leaving some flexibility in New York's outfield plans. With all three projected starters, Brett Gardner, Curtis Granderson, and Ichiro Suzuki, being left-handed hitters, the Yankees are looking for a right-handed hitter to platoon at the corner outfield positions and play against lefties.

Hairston, 32, hit a career-high 20 home runs last season to go along with a .263 batting average and 57 RBI in his second season with the New York Mets. The versatile veteran can play all three outfield positions and has also played second base in the past.

Though the Yankees remain interested, the Mets would like to re-sign Hairston and would most likely offer a multi-year deal, which the Yankees are reluctant to do this offseason as they focus on lowering the team's payroll after the upcoming season.

Earlier this offseason, the Yankees lost Nick Swisher, Andruw Jones, and Raul Ibanez, all who contributed to New York's outfield last year, through free agency.
