The New York Yankees looking to fill their third base void offered Kevin Youkilis a one-year $12 million deal according to During the Winter Meetings Yankees' general manager Brian Cashman had met with Joe Bick, Youkilis' agent regarding the 34 year old infielder.

Youkilis is believed to be looking at least for a two-year deal, but would consider a one-year if the money was substantial enough. Last year Youkilis was traded from the Boston Red Sox to the Chicago White Sox and in 122 games combined hit .235 with 19 home runs and 60 RBIs. The Yankees' offer comes close to Youkilis' salary of last year which was $12.25 million.

Youkilis would be a good addition because he is a right handed hitter with power and has a good on base percentage. Besides third he can play first and spell Mark Teixeira if needed.

When asked Cashman said he wasn't in the position to say offers or non-offers. The Yankees need to fill the vacancy at third with the impending hip surgery of Alex Rodriguez, who is expected not to return before June 2013.

The main competition for New York is the Cleveland Indians who supposedly could offer a two-year deal along with playing for Kevin's old manager Terry Francona.

Right now the Yankees don't believe they have a candidate from the organization who could fit the bill at third. Minor leaguers David Adams and Ronnie Mustelier aren't quite ready for the big league level and Eduardo Nunez is going to be used strictly as a shortstop, pinch runner and DH.

New York never made offers to Eric Chavez, who signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Jeff Keppinger who signed with the Chicago White Sox.
