New York Yankees' third baseman Alex Rodriguez will need to have surgery on his left hip in January, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Sherman reports that Rodriguez had an MRI on his surgically repaired right hip during the first round of the playoffs because of discomfort in the area. Recently his surgeon Dr. Mark Philippon and another surgeon confirmed a labrum tear in his left hip. This injury could explain why A-Rod went 3-for-25 with 12 strikeouts in the post season which led to his benching. The hip injured could explain why he was unable to rotate and drive the ball with any power. Alex looked lost at the plate during the post season and was flailing at pitches out of the zone.

Rodriguez came back in two months from the surgery the first time in 2009 on his right hip and was very productive. A-Rod in 124 games drove in 100 runs and had the best post season as a Yankee leading them through the playoffs to a World Series Championship.

Surgery is scheduled for January with Dr. Bryan Kelly at The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. A-Rod will undergo left hip arthroscopy to repair the torn labrum, bone impingement and the correction of a cyst. Rodriguez is expected to rehab three to six months which means a June return for the 2013 season.

The Yankees go into the winter meetings looking for a catcher, right fielder and bench help now you can add a third baseman too. Is it possible Kevin Youklis could be in Pinstripes to fill the void?

General manager Brian Cashman has some more shopping to do and will need to upgrade more than he and the New York Yankees thought.
