Loading ...The New York Yankees will pick up Curtis Granderson's team option for the 2013 season, tweets Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. Granderson was originally expected to make $13 million, but an escalator clause will pay him an additional $2 million for finishing fourth in MVP voting last year.
Despite Granderson's postseason struggles, this was an expected move by the Yankees. In nine postseason games, the lefty-hitting center fielder batted .100 (3/30) with one home run and one RBI.
However, Granderson hit .232 with 43 home runs and 106 RBI in the regular season. He was the only player in baseball to reach 40 home runs in each of the past two seasons.
With Granderson set as next year's center fielder, the Yankees will now have to make a decision on the corner outfield positions. Brett Gardner is returning after playing in just 21 games this year, but Nick Swisher, Ichiro Suzuki, Raul Ibanez, and Andruw Jones will all be free agents this winter.
