The New York Yankees announced that Captain Derek Jeter will have surgery to repair his broken ankle on Saturday.

The surgery will be performed by Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte, North Carolina and expected recovery time will be about four to five months. Jeter will probably be able to return to the Yankees by mid-February and late spring training in March.

Jeter broke his ankle in the 12th inning of game one of the American League Championship opening game, while diving for a ground ball. Derek was hampered the entire month of September after he fouled a ball off his left ankle. The 38- year old shortstop continued to play into the playoffs till the ankle actually fractured.

The Captain led the American League with in plate appearances (740), at bats (683) and 216 hits which was the most since the 1999 season when he had 219. Derek tied his career high batting average at .316 and is the active Yankee and league leader with 3,304 hits.
