The Yankees took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when with two outs Steve Pearce would single home Russell Martin. Both aces matched pitch for pitch till the top of the fifth when Sabathia would allow a double, throw two wild pitches and allow back-to-back RBI singles by Elliot Johnson and Desmond Jennings before even recording an out. Evan Longoria would hit into a double play plating the third Rays run of the inning.
Curtis Granderson would hit his 38th home run of the season in the bottom of the inning to cut the Rays lead to 3-2. Eduardo Nunez and Derek Jeter would hit consecutive singles to put runners on first and second with one out, but as what has become a continual theme with the Yankees they were unable to get the big hit with RISP. Jeter's single put him in sole possession of 10th place on the all-time hits list passing Willie Mays with 3,284.
Sabathia would be knocked out of the game in the seventh after allowing the fourth Rays run with a two out RBI single by Ben Zobrist. Sabathia threw 110 pitches and allowed four runs on six hits walking two and striking out three. CC looked good till that fifth inning when he started leaving a lot of pitches up in the zone and the Rays jumped on every mistake.
Price pitched well for Tampa Bay after missing his last start with shoulder fatigue. Price would get his 18th win of the season going seven innings and allowed two runs on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
B.J. Upton would homer off of Cody Eppley in the eighth to extend the Rays lead to 5-2.
The Yankees would make a run in the bottom of the inning when Alex Rodriguez would hit a mammoth two run homer off of set up man Joel Peralta in to the second deck of the left field seats to cut the lead to 5-4. The Rays needed this game just as much as the Yankees so manager Joe Maddon would bring in his closer Fernando Rodney to close out the eighth. Robinson Cano and Raul Ibanez would walk setting up first and second with two outs, but Granderson would ground out to second to end the threat.
Nunez playing shortstop would make a costly error by letting a ball go under his glove in the ninth allowing the Rays to score a huge insurance run making it 6-4.
Rodney would get the Yankees in order in the ninth to garner his 43rd save of the season. The win moved the Rays to with in three of the Yankees.Baltimore had a late game on the west coast against Oakland which was just getting under way as this game ended.
The Yankees are the only team in the Major Leagues not to record a win when trailing after eight innings going 0-54.
Derek Jeter went 2-for-5 which gave him his 967th multi hit game of his career.
