The Trenton Thunder lost their first game in the Eastern Conference, but adjustments were made and the Thunder won the next three in a row over the Reading Phillies to advance to the Championship series.
On Saturday the Thunder, aka Baby Bombers, showed their power with J.R. Murphy and Addison Maruszak hitting key home runs in the, 5-4 victory.
Catcher Murphy was 1-for-2 with a two run homer, two runs scored a walk and two RBIs. Maruszak, a shortstop, went 2-for-3 with a solo shot, two RBIs and two runs scored. In the three wins Addison went 5-for-11 with two home runs and three RBIs.
Nik Turley picked up the win going six innings and allowing three runs on six hits with three walks and two strike outs. Manager Tony Franklin mixed and matched for the final three innings using five relievers including David Aardsma. Aardsma pitched one inning and gave up one run on two hits. David is coming off Tommy John surgery and was hopeful of trying to make the Yankees roster for the stretch run.
Ryan Pope allowed two hits, but no damage in recording his second save of the playoffs.
On Sunday, No. 3 Yankee prospect Tyler Austin doubled and five relievers combined for a run on seven hits without any walks and two strikeouts over four innings to close out the victory. The Trenton roster boasts eight of the Yankees top 20 prospects which include OF Austin (3), OF Zoilo Almonte (7), OF Ramon Flores (10), LHP Nik Turley (12), RHP Mark Montgomery (14), SS Jose Pirela (15) and RHP Zach Nuding (19). RHP Dellin Betances has demoted from Triple-AAA to Trenton because of command issues and a sub-par year which has landed him on the DL. Betances who was once in the top two prospects has dropped to 17th on the list. has Yank
