Rookie right-hander David Phelps got the start for New York, but couldn't come through in the big game, allowing five runs in just four innings.
However, down 6-1 in the eighth inning, the Yankees rallied back to tie the game. Alex Rodriguez, Curtis Granderson, and Chris Dickerson each had one RBI, while Ichiro Suzuki came through with the biggest hit, a two RBI single to tie the game.
Though the Yankees seemed to take all momentum from Baltimore, the Orioles answered back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four runs and bolting out to a 10-6 lead.
Yankees set up man David Robertson, who has done a great job in the eighth inning role this season, faced just three batters and allowed three hits, three runs, and two home runs. Boone Logan came in next and faced just one batter, giving up a home run as well.
The Yankees and Orioles are now tied for first place in the AL East. They will play game two of the four game series at 7:05 PM ET on Friday night.
