The New York Yankees take the first game in this four game series, 8-2 against the Texas Rangers at Yankee Stadium.
David Phelps started in place of CC Sabathia and threw 78 pitches over five innings allowed two runs on six hits struck out three and walked one. Phelps began shaky, but attacked hitters, finished strong and helped himself by getting two pick offs in a couple of key situations.
Texas scored a run in the first on a broken bat single by Nelson Cruz. David Murphy would extend the Rangers lead with a solo shot in the second, when he golfed a good pitch by Phelps to right center field.
Rangers' starter Ryan Dempster would be rudely welcomed by the Bomber bats. Russell Martin and Raul Ibanez hit back-to-back singles in the third and Derek Jeter would walk to load the bases for Nick Swisher who would get his 200 career home run, a grand slam to give New York the lead, 4-2. Robinson Cano would walk, than once again back-to-back singles by Mark Teixeira and Eric Chavez would load the bases. Curtis Granderson would hit a sacrifice fly to make the score, 5-2.
Eric Chavez in the sixth would hit a mammoth shot into the right field bleachers off of Dempster for his 13 home run of the season. After an Ichiro Suzuki triple Derek Jeter would knock Dempster out of the game in the seventh with an RBI double which extends his hitting streak to nine games. Dempster went six innings and gave up eight runs on nine hits struck out four and had two walks.
Swisher would get his fifth RBI of the night when he would single home Jeter. Swisher is thriving in the number two hole and in his sixth game he has eight hits, eight RBIs and six runs scored.
Newest Yankee Derek Lowe would throw four scoreless innings in relief giving up two hits and striking out four with no walks and getting his first save as a Yankee and first save since 2001 when he was with Boston.
Phelps would get his fourth win and looks like he pitched well enough to secure another start this weekend against the Boston Red Sox.
Tomorrow's pitchers will be Hiroki Kuroda for New York and Matt Harrison for Texas in the 7:05 p.m. start.
