In an unexpected turn of events Monday evening, the Yankees acquired Ichiro from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for two minor league pitchers, DJ Mitchell and Danny Farquhar. To open up a roster spot for Ichiro, New York chose to designate Wise, who was primarily used as a defensive replacement late in games, for assignment.
Wise, 34, was batting .262 with three home runs, eight RBI, and seven stolen bases in 56 games this season. His replacement, Ichiro, is batting .261 with four home runs, 28 RBI, and 15 stolen bases in 96 games this year.
Ichiro, 38, will join the Yankees Monday night to play his former team in Seattle. He wore number 51 with the Mariners, but will wear number 31 in pinstripes. In 11 seasons with Seattle, the speedy right fielder has won 10 Gold Glove awards, one Most Valuable Player award, and the Rookie of the Year award in 2001.
