The New York Yankees' search for an outfielder came to an end on Monday night as the team acquired Ichiro Suzuki from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for DJ Mitchell and Danny Farquhar.
"The Yankees have acquired Ichiro Suzuki for RHPs DJ Mitchell and Danny Farquhar, a source said. Yanks also get undisclosed cash in deal," Jack Curry tweeted.
With Brett Gardner out for the season, Ichiro becomes the prototypical leadoff man the Yankees need. He also provides a rare blend of elite speed and gold glove quality defense, which includes a solid arm for gunning base runners down. Moreover, Ichiro's swing seems built for the short porch in right field at Yankee Stadium, so it's very likely that his power numbers will increase in New York.
Although he's not the spring chicken he once was at 38 years of age, a change of scenery may be precisely what Ichiro needs to get the last few drops if life out of his bat.
Pending physicals for all players, the trade will be made official as early as Monday night. He will also suit up and play against his former team this series.
