Nova had a rough outing on the mound, giving up six runs (three earned) in six innings pitched. He is now 9-3 this season after the loss.
After lefty-specialist Clay Rapada came in the game to get one out, newly-acquired Chad Qualls came in to make his debut as a member of the Yankees. He had a decent performance, allowing three hits and a run in an inning and two thirds as he finished the game for New York.
The Yankees lineup totaled 10 hits and combined to hit 3-8 with runners in scoring position, but were only able to score four runs. Curtis Granderson and Robinson Cano each picked up an RBI in the first inning to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead, then Dewayne Wise increased the lead to 3-0 with a solo home run in the third inning.
However, the Rays would answer back and tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. In the fourth, Eric Chavez picked up an RBI to give the Yankees the lead once again, but New York couldn't hold on as Tampa Bay regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning.
The third place Rays have now defeated the first place Yankees two straight days, but are still five and a half games behind for the AL East division lead. The Baltimore Orioles are currently in second place, five games behind the Yankees.
The Yankees and Rays will play the final game of the three game series on Wednesday at 3:10 PM ET.
