The New York Yankees and pitcher Jose Rafael DePaula agreed to a $500k deal back in November, 2010, but could not make it official because DePaula did not have a visa. DePaula's agent, Charisse Espinosa-Dash, has told MLB Trade Rumors that DePaula now has his visa and the deal will be completed once he passes his physical with the Yankees.
DePaula has been working out at the Yankees' Dominican academy for quite some time now, so passing his physical should not be a problem.
In 2009, he went by the name of Rafael DePaula Figueroa and stated he was born in 1992. He was then suspended by Major League Baseball for one year for false identification, once the league found out his real name and birth date, which is March 24, 1991.
DePaula, now 21 years old, is a hard-throwing right-hander with a sharp breaking ball and an overpowering fastball that can hit the high 90's, according to Baseball America. His long arms and big hands give him a clean, athletic delivery.
The Yankees have not yet announced what level or league they will start DePaula at this season in the minors.
