The New York Yankees have signed right-handed pitcher Adam Miller, tweets Matt Eddy.
Miller agreed to a minor league deal so he's a low-risk signing, but also has the potential to contribute out of the Yankees bullpen in the future.
The 27 year-old Miller was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the first round of the 2003 draft. However, he missed the entire 2009 and 2010 seasons because of surgeries on his middle finger of his throwing hand.
After two seasons off, Miller returned to the mound last season, but as a reliever instead of a starter. Pitching for Cleveland's High-A and Double-A affiliates, the Kinston Indians and Akron Aeros, he made a total of 31 appearances with a 1-5 record and a 5.93 ERA.
Though those numbers don't seem too impressive, Miller did have 39 strike outs in just 44 innings pitched.
The Yankees now have plenty of bullpen arms heading into spring training. Earlier this offseason, New York acquired relievers Brad Meyers, Cesar Cabral, and Hideki Okajima. Joba Chamberlain, who is currently recovering from Tommy John surgery, will also be returning this season.
Since Miller was first round talent at one point in his career, he's a player to keep an eye on when spring training starts and these pitchers begin competing for the final spots in New York's bullpen.
