New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman has talked with Bob Garber, agent of free agent pitchers C.J. Wilson and Roy Oswalt.
Wilson and Oswalt are two of the biggest names available on the free agent pitching market this winter but there have been conflicting reports on the Yankees' interest in them. However, Cashman has made it clear that his top priority is improving the rotation and he is going to check in on any available options.
"I'm in the process of talking with everybody," Cashman said. "That's the way the routine works."
The left-handed Wilson went 16-7 with a 2.94 ERA in 2011 as the ace of the Texas Rangers. At 30 years old, Wilson was a reliever his first five seasons before becoming a starter in 2010. In two seasons as a starter, Wilson has a 31-15 record with a 3.14 ERA.
Oswalt posted a 9-10 record with a 3.69 ERA in 2011 with the Philadelphia Phillies. The 34 year-old right-hander battled with back problems throughout the season so there is some concern about his ability to stay healthy in the future.
The Yankees have also had talks with right-hander Freddy Garcia and his agent Peter Greenberg about returning to New York next season. The 35 year-old veteran went 12-8 with a 3.62 ERA with the Yankees in 2011.
